History of Sandy Springs, GA

Sandy Springs was originally an unincorporated area in the North Fulton County. Due to its bubbling springs, Native Americans often passed by to drink the water. The community developed when more settlers began relocating to the area in the 1800s.

In 1966, the city of Atlanta sought to take control of the rural area and annex it. Residents opposed the move and fought to establish their own government. After 40 years of campaigning, residents saw Sandy Springs officially become a city in 2005. Eva Galambos, a local doctor who was on the forefront of the campaign to establish a local government, was the city’s first mayor.
